MENTAL HEALTH IN TIMES OF  PANDEMIC: DEFEATING THE ENEMY INSIDE

May 29, 2021

(source : cedar-senai.org)

Grappling with COVID-19 pandemic has been hard for all of us yet it wouldn’t be right to say that each of us are affected same as much as everyone are by this pandemic. It has taken toll on our well-being, it caused us economic hardships, loss of our loved ones, isolation, constant worry brought by uncertainty, giving risks on people’s mental well-being, taking us in a position of battling with the enemy inside; our mind.

Suicide incidents rose 25.7 % in 2020 according to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), making it the 27th leading cause of death in 2020. Moreover, cases of deaths due to self-harm ballooned in the Philippines as the economy failed to reopen. Some 3,529 cases of intentional self-harm were recorded in 2020 which was higher than the cases of death in 2019.

These figures are extremely agitating that it have arisen urge of Government Departments to call for solutions. Government officials appealed to spiritual leaders to provide counsel and guidance to people to ease their anxiety and help save them from “self-destruction” during this crisis. However, advocates and mental health groups criticized this saying “It is downright insulting for mental health professionals in the country, especially when this very religious institutions have created long-held malicious narrative about mental health”, (belief that those who commit suicide goes to hell).

Anyhow, who is better expert to give guidance and enlightenment to those who wrestles with mental issues is not the main issue or debate here. This speaks about how we face the issue that whenever one struggles with this, we tend to refer them to talk to professionals when it shouldn’t always be at this context. We should look closer on defeating this which can be achieved with the help of everyone, anyone who may have a family or friend who is struggling with mental health problems.

We may start by being there for them, recognizing the problem rather than resisting when they speak their truth like what most people do, assuming they are just acting up to gain attention.  We must not sugar coat their pain or even paint a picture so far different than the reality for it may drive them to greater depth of isolation. So, encourage them to feel every emotion and make them understand that it’s okay not to be okay for we shouldn’t really try to save them ourselves from “self-destruction” instead, accompany and become a motivation while they’re saving themselves.

It is not solely the responsibility of Government Officials, Professionals and Advocates to address this problem for it is ours as well. Although there are some situations when our attempt to be there for the people close to us who struggles with their mental health fails yet, know that failure isn’t the worst; it is regret.  After all, we won’t regret what we did when someone fails to survive but rather we regret the things we did not do to help them to.  This may be immensely difficult for pandemic affects us in so different ways and so we have distinct perspectives in life, but in this time where hugs and kisses are not possible, simply lending an ear to someone will be more than enough to defeat the enemy inside. For when there is no foe inside, we will be safe outside.

PAGBIGKAS NG TULA NILAHUKAN NG SLNHS; IKALAWANG PWESTO NAKAMIT

May 29, 2021

Ang nasabing patimpalak ay nilahukan ng sumusunod na pitong paaralan: - Central Bicol State University of Agriculture Calabanga - Central Bicol State University of Agriculture Pasacao - Central Bicol State University of Agriculture Pili - Central Bicol State University of Agriculture Sipocot - CDL Bula - Sta Lutgarda National High School - Zefirino Arroyo High School Nagtagal ang patimpalak ng tatlong araw, nag simula ito noong ika-12 ng Abril 2020.
